Well to start off, this will be a blog page dedicated to Public Education. Most of the topics will be related to either Greenville County Schools in Greenville South Carolina, or South Carolina Public Education as a whole. Every now and then I will chime in something going on in the country on education. But for the most part this will be my opinions on education and I will try my hardest to be un biased. Unless it comes down to talking about somebody that I just do not like. SO. Lets get started.
Myself:
For those of you who do not know me and are curious to know my credentials on why I think I can form an opinion on education, well. Here you go.
I am very proud to say that I have graduated from (2010 Blue Ribbon school of Excellence) Greenville Technical Charter High School in the graduating class of 2010. My graduating class had a 99% graduation rate with 100% of the students moving on to a 2 year or 4 year college. We also raised a little over 8.4 million dollars in scholar ships. Just to give you an example of how large that is: My class had 100 students. Greenville County School District had over 4000 kids graduate in 2010. They raised almost 90 million dollars in scholar ships (http://www.greenville.k12.sc.us/gcsd/news/release/1006/scholar.asp). My class of 100 students made up 11.1% of their grand total. Personally I think it is impressive.
Right before graduation, I decided that I was tired of how my high school was discriminated by the Greenville County School District(GCSD) for the better half of 6 years. All because we were a "Charter School". For example, in Greenville County, it costs roughly 12,000 dollars to educate 1 child per year. Now let me clear that a CHARTER school is a PUBLIC school and is entitled to all of the funding public schools receive. Greenville Technical Charter High School(GTCHS) spends roughly 4000-6500 dollars per student per year. GCSD deemed that since GTCHS does not offer a bus route, or has a traditional school cafeteria they would subtract a small amount for each student.
Not to mention the whole charging Charter schools up to 3500 per student that attends a Fine Arts Center or a Career center. Which that wouldn't be such a bad thing if the county made private and home schooler's pay the same amount.
Oh, and them GCSD kicking GTCHS out of League Academy's gym that we used as our "Home Court" for basketball and volley ball games for the past 8 years.
But anyway, I digress, but then after looking at education as a whole in Greenville County(which was not pretty either) I decided to run for the Greenville County School Board of Trustee's in district 28. I got a lot of heat about that for running at 18 years old but I don't give a damn. After running a hard campaign I unfortunately turned out losing to Lisa Hannah Wells by a little less than 3800 votes. (She acquired 4600, David Walker acquired 1600 and I acquired 1400) But receiving the 3rd most amount of votes out of 5 candidates was quite an accomplishment for myself politically.
I decided to stay involved in education for the rest of my life after my campaign. So this brings us to now. Roughly.
I believe education is the foundation to the American life style. We simply could not function today if we did not attend schools public or private. School's teach us how to make our selves successful and honestly I think it is something that is over looked way to often by everyone. Everyone deserves to have a choice in where they are to be educated. Education never was a "one size fits all hat" and everyone learns differently. To be effective teachers, principals, or other administrators or Public Education politicians, we must first realize this and utilize what he have to facilitate the children's need.
Come back tomorrow to read my blog post about Greenville County Schools as a whole.
Thanks.
